Mark & Rachel Pepperell started trading as Suspended Ceiling Services (SCS) in August 1988 with only $2000, no vehicle and no idea of what lay ahead. Mark had previously worked for Pinex Fixing Services where he learned the trade of suspended ceilings. Mark had the physical skill, while Rachel held the fort in the office.
Rather rapidly, SCS grew its services to include plasterboard linings, plastering, steel stud partitioning and insulation.
In 1991 Suspended Ceiling Services became a Limited company and the well recognised name of Waikato Suspended Ceilings Ltd (WSCS) was born. Mark & Rachel had employed up to 21 staff, two of which are still with the company today.
In 1998, Ewan and Keriata Cameron (The Pepperells family pastor) purchased 50% of the company and together they built the company to be a major player in the suspended ceiling industry servicing the Waikato and surrounding districts and employing over 40 staff at peak times. During this time they opened a permanent office in Haig St, then in 2005 Mark moved into his own building in Tawn place in Te Rapa. By this time Rachel had stepped out and Ewan and Keriata left WSCS for a life in England, and the business was wholly owned by Mark.
In 2006, Daniel Pepperell opened Bay of Plenty Suspended Ceilings in Tauranga, after learning the skill of an Interior contractor through working for WSCS since leaving school.
In 2009, the decision was made to join Bay of Plenty Suspended Ceilings ( BOP ) to be part of WSCS and together, the Father and Son team started working side by side & together now own 100% of both businesses. And what a time to do it! The global recession had hit, construction was at an all time low, and spirits were dampened. Mark and Daniel gritted their teeth, and stayed strong, working on the tools themselves, and keeping the books in check, while they waited for the storm to blow over. They would not let this iconic company be another victim of the recession.
That hard work and resilience paid off, and today Waikato and Bop Suspended Ceiling Services Ltd now have over 30 waged staff and 20 contractors working over two branches in Tauranga and Hamilton, and consider themselves as a major part of commercial construction. The lessons learnt over the past years have been humbling and productive, and as a result, offer a better service than ever before.
